Airbnb does not let you book a stay with an unverified phone: the number is part of the trust profile alongside the photo and the document. A host sees its status when reviewing a request and uses it to reach you during the trip. For a host the number is also required to attach payouts. How Airbnb checks the number
Changing the number in the profile resets the verification status and requires passing the check again — and for an account with reviews that is a visible signal to hosts, who look at profile completeness. Separately, at check-in some hosts call rather than message: the number should accept not only SMS but a call too, where the plan includes it.
