How Telegram checks the number
A common error is "Too many attempts, please try again later": it comes not from a wrong code but from a burst of code requests, and only time clears it — from a few hours to a day. The second nuance is the cloud password: if a previous holder of the number enabled two-step verification, one SMS is not enough to log in. Both cases are avoided by a number that has not been used in Telegram before you.

Why did the Telegram code not arrive as an SMS?
Telegram first tries to deliver the code to sessions already authorised on that number and only then sends an SMS. A clean number has no such session, so the code arrives as a message and is visible in your dashboard.
What does "Too many attempts" mean?
Too many code requests in a row. Only time clears it — from a few hours to a day. Requesting the code again during that window is pointless and only extends the wait.
Telegram asks for a cloud password I never set
That means the number already carried an account with two-step verification. Such a number is not usable for registration — contact support and we will pick another.
Will the account survive after the rental?
An active session stays until you log out, but access cannot be restored afterwards: the code would go to a number you no longer hold. Attach a second number in advance, or set a cloud password.
